Apple’s upcomming VR headset

Apple’s upcomming VR headset

Apple VR headset?! When to arrive?

If we talk about Apple’s VR headset, we talk about 2020, because this is, aproximatively, the year of its launching. Although it is just a rumour for now, Tim Cook, the Apple CEO,  does not hesitate to show his excitement regarding virtual reality and augumented reality. In 2016, he said at ”Good Morning America”:

There’s virtual reality and there’s augmented reality — both of these are incredibly interesting. I’m excited about VR from an education point of view, I think it can be really big for education, I think it can be very big for games.”.

What vision is there regarding Apple VR headset?

4K display per eye. That is how much the actual VR headsets on the market can reach so far. On the other hand,  Apple’s VR headse will be a dream headset, taking in consideration that it will feature 8K display for each eye. Also, while the current VR headsets need to be connected to a gaming system or a PC, Apple VR Headset is rumored to work independently of other devices, without being connected to a constant power source.

Apple is known for the simplicity of its devices’ design. Thereby, Apple’s trademark on its VR headset is the simplicity, because it’s supposedly going to connect to a dedicated box through a high-speed, wireless tech called 60GHz WiGig.  Apple’s current A11 Bionic processor in the iPhone X uses 10-nanometer construction, while the box will be powered by a 5-nanometer proprietary Apple processor.

How much will it cost?

There has not been made any disclosure regarding the price, but it is expected to be a pretty high one. We can look at the other VR headsets’ price in order to have an idea at least:

  • The HTC Vive costs £499/$499
  • The HTC Vive Pro costs £799/799
  • The Oculus Rift costs $399/£499
  • PlayStation VR costs £259/$299
  • Samsung Gear VR costs £100/$129

All in all, we are looking forward to the launch announcement of the Apple VR headset that will take virtual reality to another level in 2020.

Oculus Go- the cheapest way you can experience virtual reality

Oculus Go- the cheapest way you can experience virtual reality

What is Oculus Go?

Oculus Go is the newest device recently launched by Facebook , at the F8 Conference in San Jose, California. Some of the things that make this virtual reality headset unique and different are its cheap price and the immersive experience you get to have while entering in the virtual world displayed through this device.

Standalone VR headsets have been a dream until recently and Oculus Go takes it to a whole new level. We have all heard about Samsung Gear VR, Google Daydream VR and HTC Vive VR headsets, but there is something about Oculus Go that makes it different from all those mentioned earlier.

Why is Oculus Go that special? To what computers or phones do I need to connect it?

Oculus Go is special because all you need is the headset and your head. It is a standalone device, as i mentioned a little bit earlier. You simply pair the standalone VR headset with your phone, put it on your head, and you’re off to the VR races. Besides these, it offers excellent visuals, a comfortable fit and a solid build.  There are also no external tracking sensors, and nothing to set up. Pretty simple, righ?

Other opinions about Oculus Go

Lori Gil, who is newer to the VR community, got to try out the Oculus Go during GDC 2018. She said:

Oculus Go, in my opinion, is positioned to be the first true consumer-focused VR system to bring new people into the fold. No, it’s not a top-quality device with all the bells and whistles, but it is completely self-contained so the initial investment is minimal. For $200, you can get started with VR. You don’t need a special phone, you don’t even need a phone at all! You don’t need a special computer or graphics card or game console. It’s the perfect starter VR device. Once new users get into VR through Oculus Go, they can then decide whether to move on to something more powerful if they’re ready to go all-in, or stick with the entry-level device if they discover they’re not heavy VR players. I can’t wait to get one.”.

  • Relatively affordable (the 32GB model for $199, and the 64GB model for $249)
  • Low-key but solid hardware
  • Comfortable, convenient, wireless
  • Experience is almost as good as Oculus Rift

    • Doesn’t track position
    • Limited software library
    • Battery-to-charge-time ratio isn’t ideal

Virtual reality becomes reality through the Oculus Rift

How to setup your Oculus Rift Headset?
Actually, setting up your Headset is pretty simple. First, you need to download the Oculus setup software on your PC. Plug the headset and sensors into your computer, using an HDMI and three USB 3.0 ports.
Second, sync the remote by pulling out the battery tab and pressing a button. Finally (and optionally), plug the Xbox One receiver into a USB 2.0 port and pair the gamepad with it. Once these steps are complete, you can slip the headset on and jump into the Oculus software.

Some of the other requirements to use Oculus Rift are…
Regarding the graphics card, you need a Nvidia GeForce 980 desktop chip for laptops. Desktops will require at least a Nvidia 970 card or an AMD 290 graphics cardfor desktops. To plug the headset in, your system needs three USB 3.0 ports, a USB 2.0 port and HDMI 1.3.

 Built-in 3-D audio makes the VR experiences that much more riveting
 Excellent quality of the headset
 Lightweight headse

Have the best VR experience thanks to the HTC Vive Headset

Have the best VR experience thanks to the HTC Vive Headset

In the current virtual reality headset line-up, the HTC Vive represents the most expensive option because it delivers the most immersive VR experience you can have. It is fully known that HTC Vive is amazing and utterly incredible.

Key Features
•1,200 x 1,080 resolution AMOLED screen for each eye
•Requires a powerful gaming PC
•HTC Vive controllers for each hand
•Two tracking sensors
•Bluetooth for phone connection

Some good stuff to know about HTC Vive…

Regarding HTC Vive’s structure
Unlike PlayStation VR and Oculus Rift that use a single camera, HTC Vive’s packaging consists in more parts. It has two base stations which sit on the wall attached to the included wall mounts or a high shelf and, because you are adventuring in the awesome world of 3D, it has a help map to track your movements.
So, aside from the headset there are two sensor cubes, two chunky controllers, a link box and enough plugs and Micro USB cables. Pretty many components, right?

Regarding HTC Vive’s design
The Vive seems quite futuristic thanks to the dimpled plastic and because of its matte black color, but the problem is its weight of 555g without the cables, and a little bit more with them. You also need to add another couple of hundred grams if you want to use over-ear headphones.

 Fantastic, immersive VR experience
 Intuitive controllers with good battery life
 Solid selection of games already available
 Software partnership with Valve

 A little bit pricey
 Needs much space
 It has a heavy duty cable

To sum up, even if the HTC Vive headset is quite expensive ($499) and it requires pretty much space for it (2 x 2-metre one), I assure you it makes your experience an unforgettable one and brings you in the fantastic world of VR in a way other headsets can not do it, at least for now.

Google Daydream View- an excellent way to enjoy VR

Google Daydream View- an excellent way to enjoy VR

What is Daydream?

Daydream is the result of Google’s efforts to create  a mobile virtual reality software platform which lets users have an amazing VR experience.

What do you need in order to access it?

All you need is the Google Daydream View headset paired with a compatible phone that powers most of the experience and, then, you are going to be transported to a forest with a floating screen that contains apps and media content. Once in,  a 360-degree immersive environment will make your experience super realistic compared to what you experience only by viewing something on a mobile’s small screen. So, once you put the headset on, there is a whole virtual world waiting  for you to explore.

Which are the devices that support Daydream View?

Currently, the only phones to support this platform are Google Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, Samsung Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8 Plus, Galaxy Note 8, LG V30, Moto Z Force, Moto Z2 Force, Asus Zenfone AR, Huawei Mate 9 Pro, and ZTE Axon 7, but we hope to start seeing  more budget-friendly devices trickle.

Your phone needs to have…

In order for Google to create a great experience, it had to place some limitations on what hardware and software is allowed to deliver. Basically, your phone need to have:

  • Bluetooth 4.2 LE
  • Display between 4.7 and 6 inches
  • Resolution at least 1080p @ 60Hz display with 3ms or less latency and 5ms or less persistence. (Quad HD or higher recommended.)
  • OpenGL ES 3.2 and Vulkan
  • Able to decode 2 instances of 60fps video simultaneously
  • Consistent 60fps rendering
  • Temperature sensors capable of reading device surface temperature

All in all, this VR experience is a simple, compact one. You just need to make sure the Daydream app is installed — if not you can find it on the Google Play Store. Place the phone on the inside of the flap, and an NFC sensor will detect it. Then, your journey into the amazing world of virtual reality is ready to begin.
